While a great majority of us live in a home and we all have a roof over our heads, the greatest majority of us may take something like the roof over our heads for granted. Roofs are an essential part of any home that is to maintain residence in them. You will often walk down a lonely stretch of deserted road and see an old house that was once occupied and often times the surest sign that it is no longer occupied is the fact that there is no longer a roof on the home. While a sturdy roof days is one of the essential elements to a happy home there are many types of roof for you to choose from and many types of roofs for you to select your roof from so that you are the happiest and so that it suits your needs and your home the best.

Often in the surest sign that there is a roof in a home is the appearance of shingles. While shingles are the exterior of what the roof is they are not the roof itself. A roof is many different levels of wood and insulation and other training materials and could exist without the shingles. The one thing that the shingles are therefore is to deflect the weather elements and other potential inclement situations that could encounter the roof. Roofs use to build flat and it wasn't until people realize that their homes flooded because the roof was not adequately allowing for runoff of water that people decided to build roofs and a triangular situation.

Something like residential metal roofing is a lot less common than the wood or shingled roofing though it does happen. While there are many other types of roofs including rubber roofing, green roofs, and steel roofing in the Western world of residential housing when we are talking about the different types of roofing, we are for the most part talking about a roof of shingles.

Though the field opens up very widely when we get into commercial and industrial roofing. There are any number of different types of steel, metal, brick, or other concrete roofing found in businesses and buildings. The reason that these aren't found in residential buildings is a big question which remains unanswered. It would seem that if these designs worked so well in commercial buildings it would have been integrated into a home. It's probably because a building is not a beautiful thing typically and people feel like they want to be at home when they live where they live; they spent all day at work in the building to come home to it would be just a real drag.
